it's a defense mechanism, at least for me. i will myself to go numb so that i don't get hurt again.
Oh man it could be so many things. If an abuser tells us not to cry or else. If we were raised not to show emotions. If we didn't want anyone to know for whatever our own personal reasons were. We may be afraid to start for fear of letting all that emotion out we've been holding in. Could be denial or hiding, I don't know? There are soooo many reasons. Maybe you could think about it and come up with something so you could ask your new therapist. Your other one was a dork telling you it was unnatural...:-P
i have been there. i know what its like.
Maybe you're like me - you just don't feel safe enough to show your emotions. Be patient with yourself, and don't pressure yourself. No matter what your reason for not crying, I doubt pressure will help anything.
It seems like there's an emotional short in my brain. The cry wire is attached to the laugh buzzer and the laugh is connected to the pissed off one and usually, the rest is connected to cry. I'm all out of wack. My emotional response to things is pretty messed up.
So, no you're not alone. I have trouble with this too. hugs..
Working through and expressing those feelings is just part of the process.
For me, I was always told that showing emotions made me weak and I needed to toughen up. It was an embarassment to show any emotions in my house as a child.
This left me feeling NOTHING.... no happiness or sadness or anger.
With the help of therapy, I am learning to feel!! I came to the conclusion one day that there had to be more to life than what I was feeling. I had an ah-ha moment that I started crying and screaming... I did not stop crying for days! It was acutally liberating!
