One of the beginning steps I found helpful was to forgive. Not because they deserved it, but because for my own self preservation, I needed to get rid of the anger, bitterness and rage inside of myself and that only happened through releasing our father through forgiveness. Every time I thought up the atrocities of abuse, I consciously made a choice to forgive and let go of the hurt and pain. At first it was VERY HARD to do, but over time, it got easier and easier as I made it a habit. Trust me, you are NOT alone! There is HOPE, I found mine in handing over all my junk to Jesus, who knew all my pain better than I did and knew how to heal it and make me whole again.
I pray you find peace, strength and hope in the days to come. Do you have a trusted friend you may confide in as well? Someone who could come alongside you as an accountability partner to check on you as well as help you through the process of forgiveness if you choose to go that route? It's tough, but very doable. Keep your chin up... it's a process. I'll be praying for you!!
I have, ocassionally and lately, been having flashbacks of those things that happened and felt very uncomfortable in my own body, like I feel gross and disgusting and need to shower and cover my body.
For me, finding and unburying my anger was very useful, a lot more useful than just "forgive and forget." Constant forgiveness is what's been keeping me trapped in place, in a very unhealthy family dynamic, for my entire life. Finally letting myself feel how angry I am at them is what's FINALLY letting me break free from them and start a real life for myself. It's letting me choose myself, instead of feeling obligated to care for my abusers forever. I'm not saying that you should let anger turn you bitter, just that forgiveness isn't always necessary or useful; for me, it is detrimental.
