My husband takes Ativan for anxiety. He likes it because you only take it as needed and he doesn't turn into a zombie when he takes it. It just brings his agitation down several notches so he can better cope.
The trick here is go to a Psychopharmacologist, don't get something from the family doc. You want someone who knows how to prescribe this stuff and how to monitor it.

We take meds because we have issues which we can't handle.
The meds may have side effects, or, they may stop the progress of some disorders and allow other disorders to take over. People usually quickly point out that anti depressents suppress the libido. Well, Duhhhhh, depression also suppresses the libido. Maybe if my libido is depressed, I am simply not takeing enough of the med. Teenagers with depresion commit suicide every day. Kids with deepression are prescribed prozac. Some kids who take the prozac commit suicide too. Maybe it caused the sucide, maybe they were not taking enough to overcome the depression.
I was also taking anti-depressents 20 years ago. and ten years befrore that I was taking tranqualizers. The only time I ever got zombie like was when I mixed Librium with huge amounts of booze.
People are being treated everyday for PTSD without meds. See a counselor. Try everything non narcodic before taking any med. Lots of different things can help you. Personally, and I am not a doc, I think meds should be used like a crutch. Use them till the crises is past and then try some kind of talk or touch therapy. Cognitive Thearpy works on a broad range of disorders. Self help books by Dr. David Burns have been proven to help people more and for longer periods of times than do meds. You have a lot of options.
Be honest with your doc. You believe your dad was bad off with the meds? Cahances are he could have been worse behaviored without them.
Have you been evaluated by a professional? If not, It might be best to get that done first, then see what the professional recommends in the way of treatment. Onthings like this I have to sty in the moment, I have turned out to be a rotton fortune teller.
The Prozac did wonders for me, at least in the beginning. My head substantially cleared and I was able to make reasonable decisions again.
But my, now ex, wife kept turning up the heat. There was the possibility of sexual abuse of my kids with her new boyfriend. So i started slipping and my doc doubled my dosage. This, again, lifted me out of the pit but I was still in very rough shape. We decided to wait a few months and see how things developed. I started sleeping up to 20 hours in a day.
Then, one day, I figured I'd had enough and did a radical lifestyle change. I went from eating a very high fat American diet to a very low fat Vegan one. Within a couple of days, I was feeling fantastic. Then I started exercising and that has been wonderful too.
So I'm still on the Prozac and I still think it's good to be on. But it wasn't enough by itself. I had to take charge of my life somehow and getting healthy proved to be the ticket for me to turn things around.
