I haven't had dreams like this in years and three nights ago, they started up again. I have waked my husband up, screaming. I remember the dreams, completely and the are all of my father sexually abusing me. I don't have a clue what has triggered it but I want it to stop. I just don't understand.

hi, a shot in the dark but you didn't by any chance start taking any cholesterol meds like statins did you? they can cause nightmares. just thought I'd ask. is it a particular time of year for triggers? is there any other stressful thing going on in your life at the moment? did you see anything on tv? read anything in the papers, books. magazines? i am sorry i can't be of any more help. It could be triggered by something as simple as a smell when you passed by a store. if it continues to disturb your sleep I would talk to your psychiatrist or your GP. hugs.

Hi Irish, Funny that you asked. I did start taking Cholesterol Meds, but I have been on them for several mos. now. I have many triggers. If I smell the "original" old spice aftershave, I will vomit. I have been in the Mall and had that happen. Its very embarrassing. I can't think of anything in particular that would have set me off. I haven't been in therapy in about three years and it probably would be a good thing to get back. It is hard to find a therapist that you click with and feel like you can really open up to and not just talk about surface things. Being on social security, doesn't help much, because the copay is so very little that they will apply to the cost of seeing the Psych. I guess I will have to sit down and spend a day, researching on the internet to see if I can find one that will take me. Thank you for giving me some ideas.

I found a therapist who specialized in sexual abuse by calling RAINN.org's hotline number. Even though the abuse happened 40 or more years ago, they were extremely kind and put me in touch with a therapist the same day. Because it was through my local Victim's Assistance Service it was free. I ended up not staying with that therapist, but it was a good start for me.

Thank you so much, Donnawanda. That is good to know. I will get in touch with them and see what they can come up with, for me. YES!!

Upon his departure, he remarked, "I am in many people’s pockets; no one will believe you." Have you ever grappled with the silence that follows sexual assault, where the perceived impossibility of being believed necessitates self-censorship?
