I have a friend who I like, a lot. In fact, the more I know him, the more sure I am that I love him.
The only problem is he went through a traumatic event when he was younger and because of this, we can not be together. And it hurts. My own life has not been easy. Two summers ago I was almost raped by a cousin at a wedding. But I have "moved on" (as much as one can). I still hate touching from others. But I love hugs, and I do touch myself (if that makes sense.)
I just want to help this person. I know that we could have a future together if he would allow it.

Please try to understand that his issues are not about you and do not take it personally. If you truly care about him you need to respect his feelings - otherwise you are mistreating him, even if your intentions are loving. It must be very hard to be in your situation. But unfortunately, trying to force your agenda on someone else can hurt the other person, and it can lead to you getting hurt, as well.

I agree with Donnawanda. Your friend has to be willing to delve into his past. It can't be forced by anyone. And when he is ready his best bet would be to work with a therapist. And if you are with him at the time it will be his choice if he shares his experiences with you or not. And then it will be up to you to respect his choice/wishes.

Upon his departure, he remarked, "I am in many people’s pockets; no one will believe you." Have you ever grappled with the silence that follows sexual assault, where the perceived impossibility of being believed necessitates self-censorship?
