Eventually, the resources that are now available for women who've suffered trauma will also be available for men. It's taken 20+ years for women to get where they are today; hopefully, having blazed a trail, it will not take that long for men.

Exercise extreme caution, and be aware anything you say becomes record, and can become public record to be used against you.
I've never seen every counselor, but the ones I've been expose to use counseling males, boy and men alike, as an opportunity to act out misandry hatred created by their own perps.
Don't think for a second one can't turn on you without provocation or warning, and NEVER let your guard down.

Been there and got the scars to prove it.

wondering what scars? sounds like conseling was a neg experience for you and im sorry, i understand there isnt many support groups for men who r victims, which is sad,,,,,,, but also so many men feel they cant come forth society not women makes it eadier for a woman to ask for help then a man who is taught in society to be strong and able to take care of himself and admit no hurt or pain...... im sorry for what u have experienced sounds like not only at the hands of the abuser but also the system that was suppose to be there to help you....

Wow Tom. Sorry you got bad therapy. I hope you get better no matter how. I do not see it as a feminist issue. I am a man and still feel ashamed of the abuse I experienced by a live in female nanny from the age of 7-14. There is the misunderstood part from some women who think that for a man, who was sexually abused as a boy, that it was fun for them, being broken in. I don't blame them for these thoughts.

I do agree with the list posted. I had a good female therapist who helped me process the abuse at the age of 45 and I am so grateful for it. Most men are ashamed at receiving any kind of abuse and that is a shame. There should not be anything to be ashamed of that was beyond our control.

i was abused and as a lesbian woman i can say I have not gotten alot of the respect of some of the straight women within the agency i went through. my abuse was caused by a male during a break in at my home, im not sure all that is relavant but i think its hard for men to ask for help and also lesbian women or gay men..... society seems to be more supportive w straight women, but i have seen that beginning too change over the years as more of the minorities have come foreward, and the public has needed to acknowledge there is the abuse isues w others other then the hetrosexual woman. i appreciate your insight.

OK, just where does an older male who was sexually assaulted by a female social worker when he was 17 turn for help, "without misandry harassment and tracked as a potential predator"?

Tell you what, I'll give a fresh crisp $10 bill to anyone out there who can name one (1) facility within a days automobile commute of middle Tennessee, and connect me with an individual who will not interrogate me like John Walsh trying to uncover some kind of predator.

(hint: it's not the network of rape crisis centers or any of the specialized sexual abuse clinics operated by females for females, straight or gay, and for heavens sake never let a church find out you are a male victim)

Who are you people trying to kid? I didn't start this odyssey yesterday. Been a member of male survivor since 1998 when a freaky old hippie rape crisis counselor went berserk without warning one day after I had stuck my neck out trying to trust one of them.
Got 1in6 bookmarked, but what the hell's there ?
You people need to walk in the shoes of a minority straight average income white male for once.
Then come here and praise how well Oprah and they system works in recognition of female predators.

Therapy did help at least to accept the sexual abuse.Stopped therapy when I became alarmed at therapist,who was bringing her own issues into it. I struggle with sexual issues so not an easy road.Self care is more important than pleasing people.

I have been very sucessful with both male and female counselors. In all the years i have been recovering I have only been aware of one counselor use by Tomsin that was a preditor. I think the comments in your post are right on and most counselors can be trusted. that is a matter of fact. It is hard seeing all counseling being catagorically labeled as people you can't trust. It is to bad we don't here more from those who have had a successful experience with counselors. Maybe there should be an angies list for trusted counselors.

Sorry I can't find the exact dates; I only know it aired sometime around the date I posted (11/09/10).

TomSinTn, she was only trying to be supportive of male victims, why are you being such an uppity douche? In my support group we have several male survivors and we all support each other, gender never comes into play. If a woman is not trusting of a man because of her experiences, do you blame her? Get off your high horse man.
