Just Came Out...

I just recently for the first time came out about the ongoing sexual abuse with my ex-partner to my mom and my current partner, and I'm not sure how to move forward from this. My mom basically wants to destroy my ex, and my partner kinda just said "Well, I already knew he was a piece of shit and I have even more reason to hate him," and idk... I feel like I need to talk more about it, but I don't know how to bring it up without disrupting their lives and whatnot.

The people who love you are going to be outraged on your behalf. If she destroys your ex, so what? An abuser deserves to have their behaviors drug out into the light. If not they'll keep abusing others. Your mom know this. You know this. Do the right thing there.

Having said that, you do need to talk. They might not be the best to keep talking to. Have you considered a counselor?

I remember reading a book about sexual abuse where it talked about how people close to you can get so angry about it that their feelings overshadow your own. And that is not respecting you and your needs. It may require a difficult sacrifice for a loved one to pull back on their own anger in order to give you the space to have YOUR feelings, which are the most important feelings right now.

But family members may not be capable of that. Your best bet would be to find a counselor. I found a therapist by calling the hotline at RAINN.org.

You can also talk about it here, and journal here or offline. You can set your DS journals to private or "friends only" if you want.

If you do discuss details of abuse just put a TW in the title so people don't get ambushed by triggering material. TW means "Trigger warning."
