Sexual Abuse Support Group
Sexual abuse is a relative cultural term used to describe sexual relations and behavior between two or more parties which are considered criminally and/or morally offensive. Different types of sexual abuse involve: Non-consensual, forced physical sexual behavior such as rape, incest or sexual assault, or psychological forms of abuse, such as verbal sexual behavior or...
Now that doesn't mean that a child isn't going to feel awkward around them or even traumatized by them in some way.
Can you say more about the situation? Is your dad an artist? Are the women drawn in pornographic poses? Did he require that you look at them or listen to him talk about them?
How have you felt about the pictures?
Perhaps he thinks that he is promoting a healthy body image by displaying the female form like this in your home. Perhaps he hasn't thought of how you feel about them at all. Maybe he just likes them. I say this with the greatest respect, but sexual abuse and displaying images that he's drawn himself which could be considered by many to be art- they're a world apart. If he were tearing pages out of top shelf magazines and papering the walls with them- different. Still not a sexual abuse per se, but inappropriate and something he should seek therapy for, I think, if that were the case.
If they make you uncomfortable, tell him so, and maybe suggest that he keep them in a portfolio or in his own bedroom.
If it feels like abuse to you, it's abuse.
I like Steph's idea-he can show off to people on the internet, not you guys.
However, if the pictures are pornographic (itself a grey concept), disturbing or highly sexualised, and are displayed in inappropriate places, they may contribute to abusive behaviours.
It is a difficult topic. You have your opinion and he has his. Ideally, you would be able to talk with your dad and he'd understand how you feel and may choose to relocate some of the pictures you find more problematic.
In a way I wish that I could write a clear answer for you, but I don't think there is one. I'm certainly struggling to express a clear opinion, partly because we haven't seen (and I don't particularly want to see) the nature if the pictures.
At the end of the day, you're no longer a child, it's his house and his choice how he decorates it. I know I'm going to get flamed for that, but before you do, please read on...
I don't think that the "it's my house and it's just art" argument excuses clearly pornographic material being on display to children. The same applies, in my opinion, if the "art" is grossly indecent and on display to non-consenting adults (e.g. you, or casual visitors), or if it's of such a nature that it's illegal. Such behaviours would, in my opinion, constitute abuse (and may be illegal).
This means that, even if his behaviours don't constitute abuse now, they may have done when you were a child, if the pictures were pornographic.
I guess that, if your dad refuses to remove the "art", and you can't live with it, you may end up having to leave. Ideally, you'd be able to talk with him about it and reach a compromise. If he simply won't hear you, there are other issues going on.
Good luck!
I still hold the opinion that, if the pictures displayed when you were a child, were pornographic, that could, as you said, constitute exposure abuse. It all depends on the pictures and their positioning, etc.
However, the apparent disregard of your feelings on the subject, also seems abusive, particularly in the context of wider emotional and physical abuse.
