To be honest, it is your obligation to tell her Dad. The reason being is that you need to protect her from present or future molestation. You didn't say how old Chris is? My guess is that when Chris got out of jail, he was probably told not to be around children. If this is the case, and the family knows this, all the family is breaking the law. You can call your local jail where he was and get a copy of his arrest record. This will give you what he was charged with. Then ask them if he is allowed to be around children. If not, let them know. and don't be ashamed to report it either. We ALL have an obligation to protect our most prized possession. OUR CHILDREN. good Luck!

I think it's pretty clear, your niece shouldn't be around "Chris". Since he is living in the same house with her, you must talk to her father. I would think you could just tell him that yelling and confronting his daughter isn't the appropriate. My concern is ...why would her father allow his daughter to be exposed to this guy that just got out of jail for sodomy? Says something about his judgment. Do whatever you need to do to protect your niece.

to answer you questions: i believe chris is around 20 or 21.after my sister died a year and a half ago this niece of mine has pretty much lived with me. except for the few occasions that her dad decided that he wanted to be a dad again. he came and got her this about a month ago. he drinks and smokes pot. so does his friends that live with him. dcf has been called on him twice for child neglect. but they will not remove her from the house. they said that it is ok that he has pot in his body as long as he doesn't have crack. the man from dcf that told me that was fired. this was the first time they were called. the second time the supervisor came out and told me that the family has felled this child but she wouldn't take her from him either. and the child was living with me when this happened. i do not know which way to go...

well i can tell you the systems suck when trying to protect a child. my fear is the dad is just careless about his daughter and as much as i hate to say it, he could simply not care. but yes you have to talk to him. and i would suggest calling the cps (or whatever your legal child protective serves are) and let them know what she said as well. i would have done anything had someone stood up for me at such a young age.

WOW! I feel for you! It is a hard place to be in. I would say your 1st & foremost concern is your niece. Try talking to the Dad, talk to the case worker you've had contact with. Keep a very detailed journal of all this so that if it comes up again there is some what of a record... I have had to deal with this Child Protecive Services, for my sis-in-law that's 15. Her case worker & lawyers, and the assisant DA all told us to keep very detailed journals.Time,dates,what was said, what the mood was when she said it,etc. etc.
If you feel something may have happened you can try to talk to her teachers, principle,counsilers at school, they are all supoose to be trained on the signs & reporting child abuse, they are all suppose to legally report it in Oregon. I don't know in your state. Good Luck.And remember that it's all for the safety of your niece.

Hey this is awful for you. You must ask your niece for as much information as possible as to what is happening. Dont push her but just play an innocent game coming down to her level and getting her to open up. Whatever she tells you ask her if she would be prepared to tell another grown up friend of yours ie child protection services and if she is, get in contact with them and get her to tell them. If she is mature for her age as my daughter is this should be quite easy. Remember not to push her, just let her do it at her own pace. Dont tell the dad at this point as it could make things worse, just concentrate on what your niece is prepared to tell you. Child support will take it from there hopefully if they are truly professional. I have done a lot of research on this topic for my youth councellor training and i hope it helps.
