make sure you have locks on your doors and always keep the dorr locked... and be careful who you give your number to...and have caller ID activated so that you can always see who is calling you before picking up... get a peep-hole put on ur door so that you can look thru and see who it is that is calling before you open it... if you do all of these things, there will be less reason to worry

I don't know what kind of telephone service you have, but just on the off chance you don't have a cell phone, get one and carry it with you at all time, wherever you go. The reason I say this is simple. Batterers will sometimes cut a land telephone line before they close in to batter the lady they are obsessed with, thereby making it impossible for her to call the police.
You might also want to seriously consider joining a self-defense class. The Y.W.C.A. and/or Y.W.H.A. will sometimes sponsor classes for women which are pretty good on the basics and fairly inexpensive. If these organizations don't have anything, check around your area and see what's available. You'll feel a whole lot safer if you have some idea how to defend yourself.
This final idea I really hesitate to throw out there, but if you've ever been in the military, or have any type of security training, you might want to consider getting yourself a gun. The problem with this idea though is that he is just as likely to use the gun on you as you are to use it on him. This is generally a TERRIBLE idea unless you've had a lot of training beforehand. This would definitely be a very, very last resort. But it's an idea.
Another option which may be too difficult would be to consider pressing charges if you can and maybe getting a restraining order.
Maybe do a self-defence course to give yourself confidence so that you dont fear him. I think most abusers are cowards and the biggest threat would be taunting their victim. In the past, maybe your self-esteem was low and he preyed on that. If you can build up your esteem and self-worth, if you did see him, he could see you as a new strong person and not the person he victimised and I think he would be intimidated by you instead. take care
