I suppose my.biggest problem is getting myself to think of what I want. It's such a foreign concept. I think automatically during sex my go to is to just get the other person off. I don't know why.
I'm finally opening up and realizing that, like Desigol, I tend to sexualize everything. And this means like irishwriter says, to get to know your own body. Really. And this is really strange for me as a male. Especially a male who played sports and was brought up in a very Machismo culture.
I would suggest trying these two books. They are great and include important exercises to practice with your partner and with yourself (yeah, that's right, I had no idea that you can actually have a fulfilling and romantic date with yourself!):
The Survivor's Guide to Sex: How to Have an Empowered Sex Life After Child Sexual Abuse by Staci Haines
The Sexual Healing Journey: A Guide for Survivors of Sexual Abuse by Wendy Maltz
I realize now that my sexuality is not an uncontrollable force or urge that overpowers me, but that my sexuality is a healthy and important part of my core personhood.
I can share that I was numb for the first 10 years of my marriage. I couldn't feel my husband touch my skin. My numbness almost destroyed my marriage. I am so thankful for a fabulous therapist who was patient with me. It took me a year and a half of really focusing on my husbands hands touching my skin and allowing the thoughts to come and go. It is possible to take that control back. I find meditation helps. I will preface that I hated meditation at first because it triggered nightmares and excessive painful thoughts but the more I leaned into it and processed through it with my therapist the easier it has become. I have been married 16 years and do not struggle with intimacy anymore!!!!
Thanks ADC024 for the book suggestions! I haven't heard of the first one.
One I read in grad school was "A Celebration of Sex" by Rosenau it is actually one my husband and I used together to help me find positions and ways we enjoyed together. This was FUN!!!
Praying for you!
Certainly more sexual than a lot of people.
