Some psychologists say that what happens to us is that one part of our mind strives to replace the trust and/or affection that was destroyed by the abuse, which creates a conflict with another part of our mind that says we can't trust anyone. Our mind tries to resolve this conflict by focusing all our trust onto a very tight circle of friends, frequently even just one, and then everyone outside the circle is a mere 'acquaintance' if anything at all.
It tends to be an all-or-nothing thing.
But it's still like your situation. I really love them, just not that way. It's like there's a whole different kind of devoted love we experience that no one else seems to talk about.
