I made a post about a week ago entitled "cant seem to tell my friend". This post is a follow up on that one.
I had been trying to work up the nerve to tell my friend about my SA. Today i did it. I told my friend, another man, about what happened to me when i was six. He took it a lot better than i had hoped. He did not judge me, he did not say ,"But that happened so long ago why dont you just get over it". He told me that he felt honored that i trusted him enough to tell him something like that. After i told him he admited to me that he had been sexually abused by his older brother for a year and a half when he was a kid. His brother died in an accedent when they were kids. He was able to deal with his issues as a teenager, and today he is a very happy guy. He kept telling me that I did'nt choose this it just happened and that i can beat it. It felt good to be able to tell somebody that i personaly know about what happened. I feel like a great weight just got lifted of off my sholders.

I found in my journey the more I told my story the more people in my life felt safe to tell me they were abused as well. Once I got past the shame of the sexual abuse and that I was not at fault, it became a lot easier to tell another person. I have shared my poems publicly about the sexual abuse at the annual Take Back the Night in our city. So many people would come up to me later and say they too were abused. Just like here at DS we do understand, as your friend who was abused understands full well what that feels like.
