I found in my journey the more I told my story the more people in my life felt safe to tell me they were abused as well. Once I got past the shame of the sexual abuse and that I was not at fault, it became a lot easier to tell another person. I have shared my poems publicly about the sexual abuse at the annual Take Back the Night in our city. So many people would come up to me later and say they too were abused. Just like here at DS we do understand, as your friend who was abused understands full well what that feels like.
