Senior Health & Aging Support Group
Aging is an important part of all human societies reflecting the biological changes that occur, but also reflecting cultural and societal conventions. There is often considerable social pressure in many societies to sustain denial of the aging process. Join this community to discuss general issues with aging and senior health.

A letter to all of my friends ~ past and present ...
Had my GBS ( Gastric Bypass Surgery) on 1-11-11. During recovery my sutures let go and I had to be reoperated on and my sutures resown. It was a very traumatic experience in which I hemorrhaged and I vomited blood clots spewing them across the room.
I had to stay overnight an extra night ... Upon my return home, I wasn't able to rest properly as I had been cited by HUD previously for clutter in my apt. Neither my neighbor or myself had received notice of a government inspection of our properties on a certain day.
Imagine my surprise, in December, when after living here 7 years and never having been chosen for inspection before they came to my door. My daughter who was here to do laundry at a laundromat nearby, had a shopping cart brimming over filled to the top with dirty laundry the inspectors had to squeeze past to get in.
My grandchildren(6 & 7) who had been playing house then had toys, etc stewn all over the place. And we had just finished brunch so the kitchen was full up with dirty dishes, pots etc, and the stove had not be cleaned when they came. My bed hadn't been made ... I needn't go on. You get the picture.
I would like to make it perfectly clear that I put no blame on my daughter's presence. That was just a coincidence. The fault lay with whomever the manager engaged to place the leaflet under the door giving notice of inspection. Oh Yeh ... My apt would have definitely been inspection ready as it always is with proper notice!
I had been given 30 days to get my apt photo ready for reinspection by the building manager. She is going to be taking photographs to send to HUD for them to decide whether or not to evict me. That turned out to be exactly four days after my return from the hospital.
Upon my return, I wrote a letter asking for a five day extension which I felt possible as I have an aide who comes 6 hours each day. Unfortunately for me, she called off four days in a row in addition to her day off.( She's no longer working here needless to say). And, I ended up doing the whole thing myself in the post op condition I was in.
As a result, I now have an infected main incision. My surgeon had to snip my sutures and my infected incision must be cleaned and repacked with gauze each day. It is very painful. I am also experiencing a very painful reaction to the adhesive tape although it is paper the mildest tape that there is.
Because I am a "Newbie GBS patient" I am only permitted minute or liquid medications unless they are crushed (You can just forget about that! It is just disgusting!) so I have used what little pain medications I had been given upon discharge. I am now in the midst of waiting for the proper amount to be delivered. I have been in some awful pain for two days now. Oh well, it will be over soon ...
Hopefully, I will emerge from all of this a new person. I am already down 31 lbs. since the beginning of my journey in Feb of 2010. It hasn't been easy but then again nothing worthwile ever is.... 9 of those lbs. I have lost since surgery.
Right now, the infection is making me is making me very tired. It has taken me one whole evening just to compose this email ... I hope it explains to everyone who reads it where I have been and will be for a few more days ..
Please keep me in prayer as that is what has sustained me and brought me to this point in time. Those of you who have been with me realize just how far I have come ... Through the strokes, the wheel chair days, rehabilitation with walking again, GBS surgery and how far I need yet to go.
God and your prayers is what has brought me as far as I have come ... And it is with your continued prayers that I will progress. I will continue to fight the "good fight" and will be successful coming out the other side. So far it has been a 4 year battle. Thank you for staying with me.
For those of you who have just joined me recently I appreciate you all as well. Sometimes I get silly as once in a while I have a need to get light hearted. However, I want you to know, I take your friendships very seriously and am grateful beyond expression.
I have no regrets re: Gastric Bypass Surgery as I was dying anyways only slowly ...Damaging my body with High Blood Pressure ... For those of you who are yo-yo dieting ... You are enlarging your hearts. (A great candidate for a heart attack.)
On Dr Oz's show, he showed a heart after a fatal heart attack. It looked as though it had exploded. I urge all of my friends to consider your future or the no future you may have. Start protecting yourself ... TODAY.
At least I have done something pro-active to help myself. It may be no picnic but with your prayers I will suceed.
Thank you ... And please keep praying

I just screwed up when I copied all the details from my GBS Surgery site at DS ... But you get the picture ... That is what is important.
Roasted off a couple Turkey wings (cheap) for turkey salad supper last night. Am eating REAL food now!!
Still have infected incision... Still changing, cleaning, & packing with gauze BUT am having BAD reaction to paer adhesive tape. Skin has tears and burn blisters even though used olive oil to remove tape!
Have lost 31 lbs since journey has begun... No regrets.
