I feel im not qualified to answer...but why not comment anyway, im an Internet person. I have my own questions being on the other side It it the rush? The redirecrion of emotional pain and making it real so that the wound becomes the area of focus? What goes through the mind and you take objects to yourself? Is it you feel you deserve it? Is this the only way to get those you love notice and actually make you a priority? I suppose im fishing for information but now i want to know too. My stbx has what i call train track wrists from before we met. All horizontal so it was for pain not results. So yes you can absolutely self harm without intending sucide. That said the two concpets go hand in hand and unmanaged mental conditioms progress and devolve until you hurt yourself in a way you cant come back from. I loved her and made her the center of my life, had 2 beautiful kids with her and then she sabotaged the marriage and destroyed me. I feel its self destruction as it continues to rear its head in her life and unfortunately to get to her she had to go through me and boy did she. Our children will suffer and she is unsympathetic. I think shes lost her mind again but i cant save her and its only getting worse. She has to totally annihilate me, me who bound my life to her and gave her 11 of my most prime years, who sacrificed so much for her and she wont stop until she has the kids, the house, the percieved power and i have done nothing to deserve it. Ive heard of self destructive people sabotaging their relationships as a symptom of the greater problem (she cheated with randomn internet strangers or so she has confessed to) but oh my god is there massive collateral damage. Like she said when I asked "what about the kids?" She coldly replied "they'll be fine, noone died." The kids and i are utterly attached and she wont stop until we all suffer. Please help me understand the pathology. Shes destroying me and in doing so our kids sense of home and normalcy and has no way to support herself. She makes $15,000 a year and bought a car with no down payment. There are so many ways one can set oneself up to fail but I don't get it. Why hurt yourself and those around you? Why destroy good thing? Are you not a good thing? Sorry to turn this around and make it about me but i dont understand the self harm destory everything mindset but I'd really like to....just have some sort of explanation that is comprehensible. I figure ask you. I know you're your own person with unique set of circumstances. But as humans we share experiences. We're all different and yet similar. Unique amongst the collective of greater humanity.

Yes, you can self harm with out being suicidal. I had been a self injurer for many years and had gone to the emergency room where they put them down as suicidal attempts and I told them that I was not suicidal. There are many reasons for self harming and many of them are not related to suicidal thoughts. Most people don't understand this, but it's true. The people that say this don't truly understand self injury. It has only been a few years since I quit and still have cravings, but am not suicidal. Be strong and take each day as a new one.

Yes, you can. Actually, self harm is not suicidal most of the time. I've been self harming over 10 years to relieve my emotional pain. To me it's a negative way of coping mechanism when I'm under emotional distress.
