Whether you or someone you know or love struggles with self-injury, this is the community to discuss your experience, find support, meet others going through the same, and get advice on how to stop. Working together, we can help find alternative coping skills to reduce the urge to self-harm.
Be ready for scars. At first, the cuts will be small. You'll be able to hide them easily. But they will get deeper and deeper and more numerous, harder to hide. Be ready to wear long sleeves all the time, even in the summer.
Be ready for guilt. Every person you trust will suddenly become an enemy. You will worry constantly: do they know? Did they see? You will isolate yourself from everyone you love.
Be ready for cravings. You will start needing it even on good days. It will always be on your mind, never leaving your side. It will become your best friend and your worst enemy. You will hate it, but you will keep coming back to it.
Be ready for blood. There will be stains: on clothes, sheets, everything, and you will have to wash them out before anyone sees. One day you will cut too deep; you will be terrified, but have no one to talk to. So you will sit in the dark and curse and try to stop the bleeding and swear never to do it again. But it WILL happen again.
Self Harm is a serious problem and an addiction and should not be used as a coping mechanism, EVER. If you are feeling down, talk to someone. Talk to me. I am here for you and will continue to be for as long as you need me. Just do not make that first cut.
Honestly.
I cut today for the first time in months. It was lovely until it stopped bleeding. After that I was depressed as hell.
You can never really quit. The scars don't go away.
Please, don't put yourself through that.
I don't feel any of those things. My experience with it is, I do it when I am obsessing about something bad that happened that day (fight with a friend, incident at work)... and I can't feel better about it or get the incident out of my head until I cut. It relieves my anxiety, and then I can put the incident behind me and stop obsessing. HOWEVER, it does irritate me that at my age, I still haven't found a healthier way to deal with those obsessive thoughts. And I feel that it has made my relationship with my closest friend somewhat dishonest, on my part... and I hate myself for that. I don't tell her when I've done it because I don't want to upset her. She knows I've done it in the past, but she has her own demons (recovering coke addict) and I've gotten pretty upset in the past when she relapsed. She sees my cutting the same way I see her addiction, that is, we would both be highly disappointed in the other for doing it. So that's made me not want to tell her.
If you were to start, who knows what "kind" of cutter you'd be... but if you value the relationships you currently have, expect that they would most certainly change... on your part. You will start hiding it from people, and feeling that you can't talk to those people about it could make you isolate further. Not a good cycle to be in.
Cutting stopped satisfying my urges SI so my mind thinks of new ways to injure myself. Now I have moved onto burning which hurts a lot more.
Don't start cutting. It can be addicting, and take over your life.
and do not start.
