yeah, I have to agree; someone who sees cutting as a good way to get attention probably needs more help than someone like us who has a real reason for cutting.

I do hate the way that 'emo' has made cutting look like a typical teenage thing though, because for most of us that is far from the truth

i was chating on the internet and i was telling someone i wanted to stop and about all my cuts and he said kool! i couldn't believe he thought it was kool, i know everyone centers it around "emo's" their suposed to cut and i am emo and i do cut but i would never cut to be accepted or as a steryotype u cut because you cant cope with your life to cut is a copeing mecanism not to fit in, i'm ashamed of my scars and i wish i could erase them i would never ever feel proud of them.

it annoys me when people say ti's for attention, why then do i hide it.

S.I. literally goes back thousands of years for a variety of reasons and I was doing it over 30 years ago (with years between episodes) the emo lifestyle adapted to a music style much like rap, goth, hip hop, punk, techno, etc. So the ones who do it for attention have no clue about the reality of it and ONLY see it as a "lifestyle". Really, it's not even worth being offended over. We know our own realities and that's all that matters.

I strongly agree with you on this because my friend has recently turned "emo" and she came to school and shoved her wrist in my face and said look what i done but not the sad way the happy way were you can tell she was just wanting attention. even thuogh i wouldnt ever dream of showing some1 my scars like many other people.

i totally agree! i dont understand how anyone can put themselves through the pain if they arent balancing it out with something.
and i remember kerrang! doing a newsletter about this ABC emo report, and i watched the link to a youtube video of this report and it said "he says hes not emo, but the truth it etched in his wrists" WTF!?? that made me so angry. and one of my friends decided to turn emo and started cutting his wrists and showed the cuts off. its so stupid.

I dont understand why someone would cut themselves.... to feel cool and fit in. I really dont. I cant comprehend that. That is true about the more kids cutting because they heard about it... it is also true that more people do any one thing because it is publicized.... it seems that there are awarenesses to help those who do SI and then others see that and it rings in their head that ooo that might help me... so in all ways its a catch 22.... it helps and also hurts

I hate it too. The emo stereotype makes it too easy for people to make light of it. I stopped telling friends that I cut (I used to feel that if I got close enough to someone they should know, especially if I was really struggling with it and needed someone to talk to) because a couple times I actually got a "..Really? But you're not emo in any other way..." It pissed me off and I decided the support network wasn't worth that conversation. It's not just kids/teenagers either, it's people of all ages, all different kinds of personalities. People need to realize this and also realize that it's an actual serious issue.
