I cut myself the other day after almost 8 yrs of not self-Injuring. It wasn't a major cut or anything, but the fact that I relapsed after so long was surprising. I did it w/a box-cutter that I accidentally brought home from work. I usually don't allow myself sharp objects like that in my house--cuz it's just too tempting band when I saw it about a month ago...I almost asked a friend to take it away for me. Do you think on some level I wanted to relapse? Wanted to self-sabotage?
And now I'm filled with guilt and feel pretty crappy about myself that I was doing so good for so long & now I'm back @ the bottom again.
Any feelings on this guys?

Congrats on the almost 8 years, that must've took a lot of courage. Ask yourself why you cut, and be true to yourself. I believe you're still as strong as you have been the last almost 8 years that you haven't cut. I think you cut for, maybe, memory purposes. But again I'm not you, so I can't tell you exactly. I think you're still doing very well, don't let a small slip create a rockslide. Again, stay true to yourself. I wish you the best of luck :)

Thanks for the replies, you guys. I really do feel like a stronger person than I have been in the past, even despite the relapse--so it's nice to hear your words of encouragement.

Honestly I don't think the "relaplse" matters. You don't have to even count that as anything. Just act like it never happened. Normal people slip up every now and then.

When you have an addiction, be it heroin or cutting, there is a constant threat of relapse. You were addicted to it because it was desirable, so it makes sense that sometimes you want to feel that way again. But, the act of relapsing isn't what is most important. It's how you handle the situation after the act. It does not make you weak, it makes you human. I encourage you to get rid of the blade, make sure to clean your cuts, reengage in therapy (if you were ever in it), or connect with someone who understands what your going through. Make a plan for the immediate future so you don't fall back into old habits. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery.
