I know what you mean about it getting worse over the years. I already have year-round depression, anxiety, and PTSD. In winter, I'd either be sleeping all the time or frequently suicidal. It got worse over the years.
I moved to Texas where the winters are mild. I still feel it in late December but it's "SAD lite" rather than wanting to not exist anymore. At least here you can still go outside when it's cold. I moved here from PA. I didn't move here bc of SAD but it was another pleasant side effect of leaving the Northeast.
I live in Canada, so I wish I could live in Maui because of the weather and that's where I got married.
