Will scoliosis affect my future children?

Hi, I've read so many posts about this but I want to hear it from a sufferer's perspective instead of a dr's (however crude that may sound).


I had 2 curves; 72 and 68 degrees and both were reduced to around 30 degrees through spinal fusion and the placement of rods and screws - my spine pretty much looks 'normal'.


I'm just curious as to whether scoliosis will affect my children. In the near future I want a big family and I'm worried that it will affect my pregnancy or my children may inherit the condition. Has anybody gone through pregnancy whilst having had the scoliosis op and cares to share how it was? Or maybe let me know about your children - has their development been okay? Do they show any signs of scoliosis?

I know in my family scoliosis skipped a generation. My Uncle had scoliosis, my sister and I did not, nor any of the kids from the uncle side, but my daughter has scoliosis. So I believe it skipped a generation. My daughter is strong and has a great outlook so she is handling it pretty well. I would not put off having kids if I had known there was a chance my kids could have it. Now in all honesty, a couple of days ago as she is uncomfortable in her brace she said that she wish she would die and be reborn. I don't think she wants to die, just for the scoliosis too. She is number 4 out of my 5 children and the only one who has scoliosis. No one else (my uncles children or our side of the family) in my family has it either.

My first cousin has scoliosis as do I, on my dad's side. We both had to have surgery. My 2 kids were fine altho my daughter may be developing a curve at the age of 40. Her chiro told her she had a 30 degree curve, a shock to me since I watched her closely into adulthood. Her other dr said she does not have scoliosis. An odd situation. I was told scoliosis had been in older generations in dad's family. I had no problems with pregnancies but didn't have surgery until I was 44. Good luck!

It is definitely hereditary, but seems random. My father, me and my 2 kids were cursed with it but my 2 siblings and their kids are ok. I think there are genetic markers but it's still a wait and see deal. You know the signs and so will your Pediatrician. Don't trust the school screening!

Hi there,

I am new to this forum. I just read your post. I had surgery 34 years ago. I had Harrington rods fused to my spine.

I have 3 children 16, 14 and 10. I have to say that I never had any problems with my rods during any of my pregnancies. The only thing was that I was not able to have an epidural administered as there isn't an opening in any part of my vertebrae. I had to have local anaesthesia. All 3 were born very healthy. Also I was so worried that one of them would end up with scoliosis but so far they are all fine. As long as you stay fit and active you can have a very healthy pregnancy. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I remember after I had my surgery I was started the 8th grade and the P.E. teacher told me "Oh you will never have babies". First that was just a cruel comment to tell a 13 year old and second it was just ignorant.
