Scoliosis Support Group
Scoliosis affects all ages. Unlike the naturally occurring curves in the spine, scoliosis causes the spine to curve abnormally to the left or right.

I had surgery in 2001 and my rods have been hurting ever since should I be worried about it is this normal?

I hurt all the time. I go in every couple yrs to make sure the rods havent shifted, and all is good. Its just one of the joys of spinal fusion.

Hey I was lucky enough to have a "real" reason in the physicians eyes to have my rods removed. I developed a chronic osteomyelits (bone infection) and my hooks around T-3 T-4 where dislodged. I hated the rods so bad. When I go outside now in the cold weather and my back starts to tense i remember the pain i used to be in from that was so much worse. I could barely get through a work day as a front desk receptionist without coming home in tears. I am so happy that after 5 years of going from doc to doc I finally found one who would take me seriously and investigate my concerns. I would say to never give up and there is hope to find a surgeon. I thought. Now I have my instrumentation in a red hazard bag to show the struggles worth.

I want my rods out soooo badly and no one will take them out. As soon as I have my 3rd child in March of next year I'm going to make myself a priority and really push to find a doctor who will. I only have the burning/ unbearable pain where the rods are...doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out they are the problem!

I had the harrington rods put in, in 1978 then removed in 1988. I have in the last 3 years had 3 more surgeries and ended up having to have a refusion...yes refusion. Now I have 2 rods and 54 screws I am in constant pain even with the meds I am on. I would also give anything to have the rods removed but no one seems to think that is an option. Instead they want to keep changing meds. I would like to find a doctor that has been through 5 spinal surgeries the shortest being 11 hours. I am tired of doctors GUESSING what is going on and how to fix it!

I am waiting for surgery and was worried that i would still be in pain after the recovery was over, now I see my fears are real...Can the drs take the rods out if they hurt? Does it always hurt really bad? ugh! not what i wanted to hear! I was hoping all ,my back pain would go away for good cause it hurts like heck all the time now..(I also have osteosarthritis in my back and a herniated disk and other stuff I cant spell and I'm only 21!!!!)

I had my surgery almost seven years ago, and have experienced hardly any pain. Sometimes if i sit in a weird position, or lay flat for too long i will feel slight discomfort that goes away when i stretch out. I have never even considered getting my rods taken out, I never notice they're there lol Hope your surgery goes welll and i wish you the best of luck!
