Scoliosis Support Group
Scoliosis affects all ages. Unlike the naturally occurring curves in the spine, scoliosis causes the spine to curve abnormally to the left or right.
Hey everyone, my name is lauren and I'm 23 years old living with scoliosis. I had spinal fusion surgery at the age of 12. I had a 60 degree curvature so bracing wasn't even considered. I played sports all throughout high school and never restricted myself from doing the things a "normal" kid would do.
I was wondering if anyone has experienced any problems with their rods. I have been experiencing a lot of popping, jolts of pain when I twist a certain way and like a grinding noise when I move sometimes. It's a weird feeling but I just hate how my rods pop all of the time. I also have breathing problems some days since my rib cage pushes up against my lungs. I have met a few people in my life who've had the Harrington rod surgery, but I feel like my scoliosis is way worse than any of theirs. My hip bones scrapes up against my rib cage, and my shoulder blade is clearly out of socket. I hate how self conscious I am about it and it's really hard having a positive body image about myself when all I do is compare my body to "the normal ones with straight spines." I don't know why I'm writing this I guess...I just want to talk to someone who has these same problems whom I can confide in and make me feel like I'm not alone. It is very hard explaining what I go through on a daily basis to someone who does not suffer from the effects of scoliosis and post surgery difficulties.
I also bartend for a living while I go to school so being on my feet all day and carrying heavy things makes it worse.
Anyone out there who has experienced the rods popping and feel like their scoliosis is getting worse as the years go by?
