Scoliosis affects all ages. Unlike the naturally occurring curves in the spine, scoliosis causes the spine to curve abnormally to the left or right.
I was diagnosed with scoliosis and put in a back brace the summer I turned eight. I had the surgery when I was 12. I'm now 18 and in college.
Disturbingly often, I'll wake up and sit up to get out of bed and instantly begin to panic because I'm not wearing my back brace. I can't breathe, I can't think straight, and I can't remember that I haven't worn a brace for more than six years. I get dizzy, nauseous, sweaty, and I feel like I can't get enough oxygen. I don't know what to do about it and I can't let my roommate find out that I'm a head case. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do?

sounds like panic attack symptoms, what you're describing. i think a lot of people get that, but maybe since you have the history of the stress of wearing a brace, maybe that's just how your brain manifests it in reaction to all the stress you've got going on.
