Is scoliosis purely congenital?

Do you agree/disagree with this statement?

"A poor diet can cause or worsen many conditions.

Lack of essential nutrients make it impossible for your body to heal normal wear and tear or replace cells that naturally die as part of normal processes.


But, Scoliosis can be related to many things; it could even be worsened by a common sitting position where you twist or lean to one side most of the time - eg. while watching TV or sitting at your computer.."

Or is it purely congenital?

Scoliosis is NOT purely congenital! In fact, a more common form of scoliosis is called Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), in which case scoliosis does not present until around the age of 12 or so, and we do not know why is happens (idiopathic.)

Hello everyone !
I am a student currently working on the possible causes of early onset/ idiopathic scoliosis. I myself have scoliosis which urged me to find what could be associated with its occurrence ! Congenital means you are born with a condition and as stated above, more cases are AIS. As an RN I saw a few cases of congenital scoliosis as a student but did not work with kids so I don't know the stats. I was told as a teen that my curve would stop when I reached adulthood. Ha! It progresses on average 3 degrees a year so if you have a certain curve at, say 40, you have to look ahead and think about the pressure on heart and lungs as you age if you do nothing. I was told at 41 that I needed surgery. I made an appointment for a year later and bought a home gym. I was sure if I exercised my back muscles well enough that my curve would be better, not worse. I was in an auto accident on my way to that 1 year appt and another appt was made. Another mishap so it was 2 years of exercising before I was again measured. My curve had advanced by 8 degrees in 2 years. A pretty big reality check.
