Scoliosis affects all ages. Unlike the naturally occurring curves in the spine, scoliosis causes the spine to curve abnormally to the left or right.
I'm 15, I noticed my spine was not straight about 3 years ago. I didn't know what it was back then, so I did research and came to the conclusion of scoliosis. I asked my parents to take me to the doctor to get checked out, but unfortunately, they didn't take it seriously enough. I asked them throughout the years but got the same answer. This summer, I was hiking, and the pain got so bad, I begged my parents. They finally took me to the doctor's last week and my curve degree was 40. I got a Boston brace, and today is my first day wearing it. I haven't even had it on for an hour yet and the pain is worse than my normal pain from scoliosis. I've been reading up on the brace, and websites are saying it's outdated and ineffective, and can sometimes have damaging side effects. I'm living overseas right now, I don't speak the language, and the doctors here don't speak English, so it's really hard for me to ask questions and get clear answers.
Could someone please help me by giving my their opinion/experience on the brace? It really restricts my breathing and hurts when I eat. Thank you!
When I was 14 I was very overweight. I would complain to my mom of back pain, she just said loss weight that will help. True but..... I had scoliosis.
School. Checks were a joke too. It wasn't until I really made a stink about it i got checked and was found to have a severe enough curve to go pass the brace straight to surgery. This was 26 years ago. I'm doing great now. I deal with things everyday but manageable.
I'm sorry I can't give advice for your question. But it's hard when no one wants to listen something is wrong. U are ur own advocate.
