Scoliosis Support Group
Scoliosis affects all ages. Unlike the naturally occurring curves in the spine, scoliosis causes the spine to curve abnormally to the left or right.

Hello, I am new to this support group but not new to daily strengths groups. I am a mother of 2; my daughter is 14 and my son is 11. My 14 year old was diagnosed with scoliosis in April when I took her in to a chiropractor. Her back pain seemed to get worse and worse over the summer. I took her to see an Orthopedist and we did an MRI on her and the Dr. said that her bones look good and healthy as well as her disks. But for some reason when she stands for more than 15 minutes she has a numbness in her back that goes down her upper thigh. Her back will sometimes lock up, by that I mean she can't move her torso at all until it unlocks. She has had breathing attacks that she says starts in her back and goes around to the front and she gets a burning in her sternum. She is in a lot of pain when these attacks come. We returned to the orthopedist and he did a bone scan and we were told that everything looked good. So he referred us to another Orthopedist who looked at her MRI and bone scan and basically said the same thing as the first Orthopedist. I asked them what about the pain and numbness that she is experiencing? We were told that the pain she is experiencing is not caused from scoliosis and that they didn't know what was causing the pain and numbness. I felt like why am I here if you are not going to help my child! So I don't know what to do for her? Should I try to take her to a Neurologist? Is it normal to experience pain like she is experiencing? Is she just obsessing over it too much and being a bit dramatic about it? sometimes I think yes, but then other times I am like I know there is no way she would let pain stop her from enjoying this moment so she must be hurting. Any advice you guys could give me, I would be very grateful. Thank you so much.

Well you left out how severe her curve is.I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 10 and the curve was pretty minor back then. I didn't really experience much back pain until a few years later once it got to a much higher degree curve. What is her curve? It's entirely possible that the scoliosis is causing the pain and if it's not the scoliosis it's self then it's still probably indirectly responsible because it could have caused another problem in her spine.

the top is 28 degrees and the bottom is 27 degrees. She has 2 curves. She is also very self conscious because her shoulders are not in line so one is higher than the other and everyone seems to notice it and ask her about it.

definetly see a neurologist. I was born with scoliosis and nothing was done to correct it. I am now 35 and in constant pain. I have numbness to. She is not faking it she is definetly having pain get her help before she gets older so she can lead a somewhat normal life.
