Sciatica is a term meaning pain that originates from compression of the sciatic nerve, the longest and largest nerve in the body. If the sciatic nerve is pinched or compressed (perhaps by a bulging disc in the low back) a patient may experience leg pain--the classic symptom of sciatica.

Is this sciatica?

I had a baby going on 1 yr ago. I hade a c-section. I didnt start having this feeling until about 4 months ago. I feel a pain that starts from my left side of the waist, to my hips, butt...shoots down my front, side leg (depending on how I am laying or sitting) then it shoots to my know then to my toes. Sometimes I get little tingly or numbing in my toe (rare buts its happend)

I am a bit scared and worried, because I dont handle meds very well..

I have also gained some weight and I am starting to excersise, to see if this helps. Can someone help me please...does this sound familiar to you?

It sure DOES sound familiar. Do you know if you have other problems with your back? It sure sounds like sciatica to me. I've had it for 24 years, and it sounds exactly like mine. It hurts like HECK!!! I've been on pain meds for years, and there are some days I can't even walk.

usually it's caused by a disc, but not always. Have you seen a doctor for this yet? If not, you should and get an MRI with and without contrast material to see what's going on. I wish you the very best. God bless and let us know what you find out. Hugs, Lee

Yes, sweetie, that is what it is. Oh, sometimes it get to be too much and nothing can be done about it. I mean it a damage nerve so you can replace it. Like my Dr. would say to me and at 1st I wanted to choke him but he said "you will have to learn to live with it" and I thought "oh yea, I don't think so but I have learned to live with it. He has prescribed GABAPENTINE (?SPELLING) and that has helped alot. Yes, it does help to loose weight too.

I have a form of Sciatica known as Periformis Syndrome. My Left side does the exact same thing!

Oh, sorry I meant to say that it's nerve damage and there is nothing that can be done according to my Dr. Applying heat works for me too.I hope you are feeling better.

My sciatica pain started almost exactly one year after my daughter was born. It has been a battle ever since (she just turned 4!!) The pain starts in my lower left side of my back, deep in the butt and then down the center of my leg to my knee, and sometimes down to my big toe. I was diagnosed with sciatica. I take pain meds when it gets bad. Moving around does help. I can hardly walk straight sometimes in the morning, but as the day goes on and I can stretch and walk,,,it feels better. I found that the best thing to do is walk,,,and,,,,I always take a cane. It helps with not limping and takes the pressure off of the hip. Ice packs help and stretching.
