Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by impairments in the perception of reality and by significant social dysfunction. Untreated schizophrenia is typically characterized by demonstrating disorganized thinking and experiencing delusions or auditory hallucinations.
That is fantastic that your uncle has something that helps him and he embraces it. "Crazy" is a mean, unspecific term which doesn't really mean anything. Terms like psychosis or hallucination or paranoia, etcetera, have specific medical meanings based upon facts. Even the names of disease have specific medical scientific meanings based upon facts. "Crazy" means nothing in comparison. It's just a mean label.
Even "insane" doesn't really mean much. It's not even a medical term. It's an old-fashioned legal term that really doesn't have much basis in science.
Bless you for caring about your uncle and trying to understand him better. I am sorry that you suffer from mental illness as well. I wish you strength and success in your wellbeing (and for your uncle too).
It might be helpful for your uncle to see if he can branch out into some other soothing activities that help him stay calm. I'm not saying he should quit the soap carving. He should definately keep doing that for both creative and health reasons. But maybe if he picks up some additional techniques of things that are also socially acceptable and safe, then it might help him to be even better. Creativity is a wonderful thing.
And it's technically very beneficial for schizophrenics to keep doing activities that stimulate their minds. Doctors and researchers say that it keeps the brain/mind in better shape to keep it active socially and with technically challenging tasks.
Don't forget healthy diet, sleep, exercise, avoiding stress/toxins, and soothing activities. Those are underestimated in importance. Even some doctors neglect to emphasize their importance.
You keep your head up too. :)
Peace to ya!
