Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by impairments in the perception of reality and by significant social dysfunction. Untreated schizophrenia is typically characterized by demonstrating disorganized thinking and experiencing delusions or auditory hallucinations.

On Twitter I recently came across this article that made more sense for me in explaining my Schizoaffective Disorder than anything I have ever read including the DSM-IV:

The articles explains the hearing voices phenomenon that so many of us suffer from as subvocal speech. Subvocal speech is a very real type of speech made by the brain in activating the vocal chords but not the lips and mouth. To the Schizophrenic a voice is heard, but only within the brain. That is the voices that we hear.
If you're on this message board you probably hear voices. So do I. These voices are coming from within ourselves. Schizophrenic and Schizoaffective people have a defect in the brain circuit that recognizes if we are speaking or not. With no explanation of who is talking within the brain, the brain invents a million possibilities.
I used to love thinking my voices were ghosts, aliens, faeries, Gods and Goddesses and hope they were not demons or the devil. I would do tarot readings to contact the spirits in my mind and gauge whether or not I should continue the reading by who I figured out I was talking to. I realize now that this is simply the coolest game I can think of to play by myself and perhaps not psychic granted by my Schizoaffective ability as I had thought.
But still, if it's within me that opens up the question of what is within me and perhaps my dead wife is still within me, her memory. Is that what I hear in my brain? Or is it just my vocal cords firing off conversation to myself of what I wish my wife would say to me after her death. Perhaps.
What really proved this theory for me was the experiment they did on the schizophrenics. By holding a microphone against the neck of the schizophrenic person while they were hearing voices, which now I totes want to try, it becomes possible for other people in the room to hear the voice that the schizophrenic hears because the vocal cords are moving.
Isn't that crazy!! This totally explodes what I had previously thought my voices were, but opens up so many even more interesting questions.
What do you guys think of this explanation for the hearing voices phenomena. What do you believe it is? What does your psychiatrist, your partner tell you it is?

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!
Given that the whole basis of schizophrenia is the schism so that people don't realise that what they are recieving are their own thoughts and that unlike most people they are more negative and less rational...the question is, why don't people with schizophrenia recognise these thoughts as their own and why are they so exagerated and often negative?
That it's been discovered that these thoughts are subvocalised and therefore are really an auditory phenemenon is interesting but a bit beside the point.
I see the "top comment" says something similar.
