That sucks! Just don't do the mistake that I did, which was try to stay in uni while sick! I racked up tens of thousands of student loans, all grades F's or withdrawals for about 3 years even got suspender due to gpa/grades two or three times and switched colleges every semester to avoid the suspension or probation from the other. I had two successful semesters last year. The first semester I only passed 1 class but it was an A then the second one I had 1 A 2 Bs and 1 withdraw. Now I'm over my credit hour and student loan limitations and am out of appeals from what I get, and I only need 4 or 5 classes to have my AA. And I currently still owe the last Uni about $6k because I had a mental breakdown the last semester I was there and quit classes and they are refusing me a medical withdrawal so I told them they could just try to get the money out of my arse because I haven't worked 6 months in the last 5 years so I had no income to pay them with. I told them they could always let me back into the Uni and use the fin aid money that I would get in excess to pay the $6k but they didn't like that idea :] Hope you get to feeling better and we're here for ya when you need to rant!!

I am a parent of a newly diagnossed schizophrenic son and wanted to know if it would be reasonable to put my son in college to keep him engaged or would that cause added stress. Do you know the best course of action to take when it comes to approaching education or a program I can get him envolved in?

You are in a hard situation. I agree. But you need to take care of your health mentally or else none of the things you mentioned will ever last. You will have time when you get out of day hospital to go back to uni, hook up with people and make friends. As for dropping off the map for most of your friends?? I don't think a real friend would do that so you are not losing anything. You know what I mean?? I go to a partial hospitalization program too. Right now that is my life. In the future I hope that what I have learned will help me with the other aspects of life. Good luck to you my friend.

You asked about your son attending college and if it is doable. For some people it is and for others it isn't. Sz is so different for each person even though we have similar symptoms. I tried the college route. I attended from 1995 to 2005 and never got a degree. I was able to go on grants so I never paid a dime but I was dropping classes left and right out of fear. I did finish a trade school but never was able to work in that field. Uni was particularly difficult. The people swirled around and the noises were so loud. I kept forgetting where my classes were. I kept zoning out in class. It just wasn't for me. But then there have been other people with sz who do fine. There have even been people who have become psychiatrists and other high professions with sz. It is a very individual thing. Encouraging your son to go is fine. Just dont force it if he can't do it. Only time will tell if he can handle it
