My husband left.

My husband has being dealing with this illness for the last 20 yrs. We tired over and over to get him help. He has been in and out the hospital more than we count and we'll all the mess new to old ones that were revisited. My husband decided that he wanted to be free he left wanting to be homeless and that was the best option for him. The children and I see him once in awhile it sad to see him like this. My children really don't understand what's wrong with daddy.. All I can tell them that daddy is not well and pray for him and keep him safe. I just pray that he will get help but for now it's nothing I can do.. He said that is is happy and that's where he needs to be..

An immediate family member can petition the local court for a mental evaluation/temporary committment if the loved one is a harm to themselves or another. I have had several necessary interventions to encourage better self care. It can work if you work it. A reckless lifestyle can be considered self harm. Not sure if this helps but you as his wife do have this option.

jacob is right. homelessness can be technically considered grounds for involuntary committment to mental ward of the hospital. i know because it happened to me a few times.

most people dont really want to be homeless, but it's the delusions that make them feel like it is a better choice. most delusions feel really bad and are worsened by being around television and people that don't understand.

You are in a tough spot. Kudos to you for being such an incredibly devoted wife. I hope you are finding the support YOU and the kids need through all of this. My wife and I have played out this exact scenario a few times. You should talk to her for ideas on how to cope. You can send her a message via me if you want and you gals could talk.
