Hi, I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. From my understanding its a rather uncommon mental illness so its hard to meet other people with this ailment. What I'd like to know is what the typical life is like for someone with this mental illness, how they go about living their daily life in regard to family, friends, work, school etc. I was diagnosed back in 2013 and I've longed to reach out, to interact with others with this illness. Any incite anyone could give would be much appreciated!

Thanks for reaching out! I try to think of symptoms instead of the illness as a whole. There are, after all, a lot of symptoms. I have visual and auditory hallucinations and some delusions. I cope with these by working on my impulse control, managing my anxiety, and attending trauma therapy. I strongly suggest you visit www.psychcentral.com and look up more information about schizoaffective / schizophrenia and take a self test for your specific diagnosed illness or illnesses. It helped give me some focus. I hope this helps!

Hello, may you be well today. Fully understand this disorder effects on daily life. I began to notice this disorder in 2012, alone and ashamed for a long time. Today its worse daily, I manage with a combination of methods. Mind-fullness teachers: On You tube help with centering the inner you that desires peace, meanwhile the activity/chaos exists all around you. I have even experienced the auditory hallucination's wake me from what I thought would be a deep sleep. Other times these voices female and males interrupt while I am listening to someone else speak. Sometimes I want to scream. I am stronger each day. Still suffer evenly just as much. Anger has also become a huge issue , few days ago I discovered the Dalai Lama , currently learning to manage anger through his wise instructions. As far as romance and friends still working on resolving soon in near future. Now the daily goals are to cope much better in every moment. I am an older person today. Prior today few years ago, I wasn't in control and any men were able to use my body and leave me. No more. I suggest anyone with this disorder cope daily and seek some one romantic or friends who can have real empathy, join classes for recovery. Otherwise, constant judgement and extra mental and emotional pain. May you and I find happiness in mind sooner in near future. By the way, I not on meds today, meds made my body too weak-much sicker! therefore , my recovery is much more challenging in every moment.
