Hello,

I am new to this group and hope to find some answers. My 19 year old son was recently diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. He is not bi-polar, only has depression with psychotic symptoms.

What I do not understand is where this came from. Most of the studies that I have done state that those with psychosis (hearing voices) have a genetic link to someone else in the family who has similar symptoms. I do not have these symptoms and neither does his father. I have spoken with other family members and no one suffers with this.

Does anyone know if this is common?

Also, he was an avid marijuana user, has also expirimented with LSD and mushrooms, however he claims that he heard voices before he started using drugs.

He is not using any drugs at this time and is trying hard to get his life together, but I really want some answers. Can anyone help?

I have schizoaffective disorder. No one in my family has it. I have never done drugs. Drugs like marijuana can increase the likelihood of getting schizoaffective disorder, but biological factors, as well as ones environment and experiences can increase the likelihood of the illness.

I used marijuana a lot. I have 2 family members, an uncle and a cousin who have been diagnosed similar to me. We are all the oldest siblings and male. I have never had any hallucinations, although I once saw the stars move when high, and a man move through a wall and smile at me. But I see those as real experiences to be explained, not false or hallucinations
