How long has it been since you saw the Rheumatologist? Typically you have to see them every year. Some require every 6 months. Some require bloodwork every month or two. If that stops, so does the medication refills.

Do you use old fashioned MTX with a manual syringe or do you use a newer, more expensive version with an pre-fill and autoinjector?

Most doctors don't know what insurance you have, or if you use a co-pay assistance program, or if you have any at all unless it is a really, really small practice and they have to handle billing/accounting as well.

Pharmacies will run your prescription even if you don't have insurance, but usually won't dispense it until they give you the price tag which can be quite substantial for some of the RA drugs out there. Once they simply ran it and sent me the bill to the tune of about $3000! But if they have a valid prescription they will fill it as long as you don't have an outstanding bill with them and can cover the cost even without insurance.

Fortunately Methotrexate, also known as MTX, is a DMARD and not a biologic and is an older drug so it's on the less expensive side.

My going guess for it being denied is that your doctor didn't renew your prescription for one reason or another. For me it's usually they need blood work done to check to make certain my liver and kidneys are fine.

The only way to know for certain is to contact your doctor.

Do you inject the mtx or take pills? There is a difference in dosage, and one may be more effective than the other for you, but there is also a price difference. If you end up having to pay out of pocket, that's something to investigate.

Melinda, I agree with some others, blood work. If I don't get mine done every 6-8 weeks, I get a relatively harsh letter from my RA. On MTX, they want to watch you liver. I doubt insurance/none has anything to do with it, unless your Dr. is one of those that refuses to take medicare patients.
