Kimberly97 ~ I had a goiter diagnosed in my early 20's and also had hyperthyroidism. I was treated with I131 which chemically ablated my thyroid gland and it's function. I now take Synthroid daily and have for 30 years. I've been on a steady dose and just have blood work done once a year. Hope this helps.

If the radiologist is calling it a goiter then probably not....however since you're "hyper" they'll probably want to remove it or "kill" it via nuclear medicine. If they do biopsy, it's a really quick needle biopsy. I'd imagine they'll just have you drink the nuclear stuff (radiation type stuff) that will kill the thyroid.

One thing about the thyroid is that it's the only thing in your body that utilizes iodine. So even if it were to be cancer (my daughter had thyroid cancer), the all chemo is attached to iodine so it only effects the thyroid. You don't lose your hair or become ill, etc. The surgeon told us that if you had to choose a cancer to get that you would choose thyroid cancer. There are 4 types but only 1 will rarely spread. My daughter had to drink that nuclear stuff after they removed her thyroid...then she had to basically be in a room by herself for 2 days. Isolation so that no one was exposed to the radiation. Sad but very effective since it's so targeted with iodine.
