Have you used Voltaren Gel, the Rx topical ointment? It works fast and well when I can target small areas of pain, such as knuckles or ankles. I can't take ibuprofen because of Gi bleeding, but this is absorbed through the skin and by-passes the stomach. The orthopedist gave it to me after I broke my ankle, but the rheumatologist didn't seem to know much about it.

I've used Voltaren gel for years. My Rheumy gave it to me and then my foot dr suggested it as well. From there the Neurologist suggested it too. I feel like I have to use it consistantly for a few days for it to kick in, but it does help.

It kicks in within 5 minutes for me, but I have used it only for about six months and not very often.. I have been very careful to follow the directions because I know I can't take ibuprofen by mouth. I wonder if you can build up a tolerance to it. Thanks for the information.

My rheumy let me have a sample to try because NSaids trouble my stomach and kidneys. Voltaren Gel worked great for my finger joints. Alas, my drug co-pay for non-generics is too high to warrant using it. As an insulin-dependent diabetic with RA, I have too many other drugs to buy. But it is good stuff. I understand it is much cheaper in other countries and available without a prescription.

I am so sorry that you aren't able to get the Voltaren gel. I don't understand what's going on in the national scene with the medical reform, but I wish it would change so it could help you with your multiple issues. God bless you.

I use it regularly. In conjunction with tramadol, it takes the edge off.

i use it along with another cream from a compound pharm. alternating the two really help

I use Volteran gel and I think it does work well. I am going to apply some now because I have taken two Tramadol and still in pain which is why I am still awake on the computer. Probably because it is going to rain on Wednesday. I would just call in sick tomorrow, but I know three staff members are already out so I will trudge in. I think it was my podiatrist who prescribed the gel when I was having so much pain with achilles tendonitis.

Christine, When I hear of people like you, I know how blessed I am! I hope you get some relief soon and I am sending you a lot of positive power. My long path to an RA diagnosis began with Achilles and ankle pain and that's when I was introduced to Voltaren gel. Because I was dragging the sore foot, I tripped over a gas hose and broke the foot and ankle. Then the orthopedist sent me back to my internist who eventually sent me to a rheumatologist. It too two years. Good luck and feel better.
