The only time my teeth hurt is when I have a sinus infection. Then they hurt like crazy.

I get this, yes. It moves around, more on the top than the bottom. My jaw joints have been severely damaged for decades, but the tooth pain thing has started in the last year or so as inflammation has spread through my joints. It seems to me that the connection between tooth and jawbone is, in effect, a joint. Ligaments hold them in. Why couldn't that tissue get the same problems as in any other joints?

Sounds very painful. I've only had my Jaw hurt on both sides by my ear. Luckily it doesn't occur often just during bad flares. I hope you can get something so it doesn't happen anymore I couldn't imagine.

do you know if you grind your teeth while asleep? ever worn a dental device to prevent this? what does the dentist think?

I haven't worn a device but I don't grind my teeth in the night. My wife has TMJ and I'm familiar with the symptoms of it. When I take the Humira injection, the pain goes away for a few days. As soon as I feel the Humira wearing off, the pain starts back again.

Funny you mention Humira and it wearing off. I find that the first week of my injection I'm doing okay, but the next week I'm not. It's almost like I need to be taking it every week instead of every other week.

Rcross, I have the same issue as you with Humira. At first it seemed to work for about 10 days and then wear off. Now, I'm lucky if I get 6 days. I'd LOVE to take it weekly!

YES! I don't have Jaw issues but I have had episodes of terrible throbbing teeth & gum pain. The dentist finds no cause for it and the RD says it's not RA related but IT IS. There is no other explanation.

I have read somewhere that on rare occasion RA does effect the jaw. I agree with the point altoclef made. If it can effect the jaw, I don't see why it wouldn't effect the ligaments around the teeth too. I had my teeth hurt while I was taking mtx, but not since then.

I have jaw and teeth pain that is unexplained also. It will radiate up the side of my face as if I had an ear infection or something. It's hard to explain. Then one day I will notice it's all normal again until the next time......i don't grind teeth since due to my epilepsy I had broken so many teeth from seizures that I had my top ones pulled and have an upper denture.

I had RA in my jaw. Thought it was my teeth and it turned out to be my jaw. I got a cortisone shot in my jaw, pain never came back. Shot didn't hurt.

'ole Bluedogs2 has a loud clicking noise when I chew and every click has a "pinch" to it. I asked the PCP and she said to ask the rheumy so I thought "here we go". Rheumy did an x-ray and said "Go see this jaw bone guy" (dentist). So I did and he took one look, called his wife and said "Honey, I can retire now"

RA in the jaw bone at the hinge on both sides now with a nodule on the left side. It's gonna cost more than I'm willing to fork out right now so I just click, pinch, click while eating. Annoys me no end.
Teeth (the few real ones I have left) hurt all the time - makes no difference what I do or who I see - just too many years of not taking care of them properly.

Thanks for all of your thoughts. I'm so glad that I'm not the only person with this. I went into the RA doctor today and he found swelling and a lot of inflammation in both of my jaws not to mention the pain I'm back on methotrexate again (8 pills a week) with the humira and ibuprofen. In 4 weeks he is going to add prednisone as well. Just thought if give a follow up and let you know finally the doctor agrees....it's RA causing my mouth to hurt so badly.

chewing gum makes my jaw joint (right in front of my ear) hurt. If you put your finger right in front of your ear and open your jaw you can feel the joint--ouch
