This is outside my range of issues but I wanted to comment because I my left knee has begun to hurt lately. Though mine isn't swollen, like yours, it feels like it is swollen.
I hope you find something soon and, if/when you do, please share it with us.
I can suggest for the knees and ankles the gel Voltaren. I use this and it is really helpful. I was in excruciating pain, rolling in my bed. I couldn't get on my computer, read, anything. Now I can rotate doing these things and resting.
Last Christmas I had my left knee total replaced for the third time.
You asked how to reduce the swelling ? First you have to have Your knee/leg high up over Your body so Your knee can drain down into it.
Ice works for me but the only real way to help your knee is to stay off and again the knee needs to be really raised.
Both my Left knee and ankle are swollen with my left knee twice the size of my right knee. Recent xrays already show RA attaching itself to every part of my new knee, my Orthopedist shock his head and stated he's never seen RA grow so quickly in a new replaced joint. "lucky me"
If You have access to a hot tub or swimming pool this is the only real excercise You can do that I'm aware of that will not further injure your knee and ankle.
