I carried private Blue Cross until my SSD was approved, even though it emptied my bank account and my 401K. I couldn't get prescription coverage though. I needed it for two years after approval too, because after you get the SSD, you have to be on it for 24 months before the Medicare kicks in. Even with Medicare, you need extra insurance and prescription coverage. I also have BlueCross for that. So keep the insurance, hon. You need it.C

I have been awarded disability, however it has not been 2 years yet, so not on Medicare. I am medically insured under my spouse's policy which is with Blue Cross, however. Not sure how it will shake out when the Medicare kicks in. Anyone know?

You need to have insurance even if applying for social security disability. Once you are accepted to SSDI you still have to wait 24 months to be eligable for medicare. Even when you get medicare you still need supplemental insurance to help cover the costs of what medicare doesn't pay. I want to reiterate that the 24 month clock begins ticking the day that you applied not the time you are approved.

Thanks 51 percent and bizemomm. It helps to know what is coming. I will have to re-check my award letter for the date, as my impression was it was the date of the award. That will give me less time for sure! Time to study up some!

I have medicare and am paying for part B insurance. I am also covered on my husband's BCBS policy from work. The BCBS pays as my primary insurance and Medicare part B picks up what BCBS doesn't except for a small deductible.

When my hubby retires and we lose the BCBS thru his job we will have to get the supplementary insurance that Bizemomm mentions. It's expensive but I have a complicated medical picture so will definitely need it.

We had insurance when I applied for SSD and it wasn't a factor in the process. So you should be fine. Hope this helps...hugs jilly
