I noticed on NBC that there was a sement on how many families are not letting their children take the usual childhood immunizations. I was gratified to hear one physician mention that not only are the diseases a threat to the children who aren't immunized but also to people who have RA, which she named specifically. Public awareness is important!

It's very important! My sister refused to immunize her son until my Mom had a long talking with her. There are so many new strands of diseases and we need to protect out children. Though I'm not too keen on the new HPV vac for teenagers. But definitely immunization for then newborns.

It's funny, but in K-12, apparently parents can say, No, my child is NOT taking vaccines." but in colleges in Texas, you cannot enroll unless you have taken the meningitis vaccine.

I feel blessed that vaccines were invented! Parents who don't vaccinate are taking a bigger risk than they think, mostly because as the unvaccinated number of folks gets to a certain size, the chances of being in contact with an infected person grows! If you are the only unvaccinated person, no one else is gonna be sick, but if 20% are unvaccinated, then someone is likely to get sick. My two cents.

While I am in no way advocating not vaccinating children(2 of my three have had all their vaccienes, and one has had most till he had a severe reaction and ended up in the er after his kindergarten shots), I can understand a little not vaccinating them. I have a child on the autism spectrum, and it is scary. I KNOW it wasn't the vaccines(this isn't the child who missed his middle school shots), because he was showing symptoms from birth. However for those mom's whose children begin to show symptoms after vaccinations--it is easy to blame the preservatives,ect in the vaccines for the dramatic change in their children.

It is scary to me not to have a child vaccinated....but I have empathy for those moms who are terrified of living with a child on the spectrum. We had several really bad years when he was small and still have struggles as he learns to live in a world that makes no sense to him at all.

My kids have all been vaccinated(except for the middle school shots for my one who reacted badly enough to end up in the ER)....and I always preach that it isn't the vaccines that cause this....but I can't guarantee I am right. And Autism is a scary prospect.

My brother-in-law, a pediatrician, had one of my chldren take their immunizations in half doses once he showed signs of allergic reaction. That meant twice as many shots, but he was fully immunized and protected.
