In January I fell and fractured two bones in my L ankle (tibia and fibula) while on vacation 8000 miles from home! I had surgery. Pins, plates & screws. Non weight-baring for 6 weeks in cast, then a walking boot for another two weeks. Most of that in the hospital and nursing home in NZ.
So, here it is almost a year later. I rolled over in bed Sunday night and OUCH! Take a look and there's a big bump!
I knew it was related to the appliances in my ankle. Called Doctor and got an appointmt for the following week. Posted on FB and freinds said: "NO! Don't wait!" So I called the dr back and explained what was going on and got squeezed in that day (Monday). Got xrayed and confirmed it was one of the screws (in the red circle on the photo) had come loose. He said unless it was removed immediately, it would break through the skin.
I am having surgery to have it removed TOMORROW!! Under local anestehtic. It looks awful but actually doesn't urt unless it's touched and I can walk!
When I had my foot reconstructed, the screw worked its way out of the bunion when there was no calcium in the bone.
It was painful, but didn't stick out like yours. Over the years it calcified over, but it was still painful and I could not put it down on the bed. Seven years later, I got the screw out with a local. The freezing was horrible, the grinding through the bone I didn't feel.
It was the best move I could have made. I have no pain now. I hope you have the good results I did, WG!
Doing FABULOUSLY! NO PAIN at all! I wound up having general anesthesia and no pain! Have a dressing and surgical shoe that stay on for two weeks till I see doc again. No running or jumping till then. But I can walk just fine and drive!.
Still waiting another week for bandages to come off.
