Five and a half hours in emergency room at Christ Hospital Tuesday. They wanted to put me in an Assistant Living place for a week or so for therapy. I don't think the ER Doctor understood you have to get the inflammation under control before I could stand someone pulling and twisting my arms, legs...etc. Opted for a big steroid shot and a strong pain shot and called it a day.
Debbie (my wife) and I had to chuckle even as I was laying there in so much pain. My RA Doctor is on vacation but her office (Doctor on call) told me to go to ER. The ER Doctor came in and ask me what he was suppose to do for me? Then a few hours later he started talking about all this therapy stuff and said nothing about my joints swelled up like baseballs. Then a lady came in and wanted to schedule someone to come to the house Monday and do PT. I told her it took two people to get me dressed (Debbie had to call her dad to come over and help) and in the car and over here and there was no way I was going to let someone pull on my legs/arms to stretch them until they get the inflammation under control. She took it upon herself to get me a huge dose of steroids after I told her that's what we though they would do from the beginning but I wasn't in my right mind at the time the doctor came in to tell him, and after the shot of dalata (sp wrong proabley) i was out of for a few hours.
After getting home and being here about an hour or so, it's working and I can walk and pain level is down from a 10+ to a 3. For the first time in weeks, I slept all night and woke up this morning with no pain, no swollen joints. I'm walking normal, feeling like a real person again. I don't know how long this shot will last but I'm going to enjoy it while I can..
Anyone know how long this shot might give me relief? It was 60 mg of steroids right in the vein. Everyone have a great evening and I wiish all of you a good nights sleep and a pain free tomorrow.

That degree of swelling must be agony.
Didn't the prescribe anything to help keep that inflammation down?
The shots are wonderful but they do wear.
What are you taking to treat the Arthritis?
Feel really bad you had to go through such a difficult time.
Things happen when our doctors are not available. ER is not comfortable & you never know how you'll be treated.

Each person reacts differently
I hope the Humira shows up fast, and that it kicks in quickly once that needle hits your hide. ERs are a great place to stay away from, and as you found out, the collective knowledge of the staff about RA would fill a thimble to the brim.
Perhaps something else may help tame the beast while your waiting for Humira.
Perhaps it would be worth inquiring about to help that pain level from spiking back up.
It's miserable to feel so incapacitated by pain.
If it's bad enough to send you into ER it's time to discuss any other options with your Dr.
