My "thing with feathers"

So Sally's post, and Alto's poem response, got me thinking. Actually obsessing a little. But it was so much fun and so... Peaceful... I thought maybe someone else might appreciate it. It's a little off the wall, but, so am I.

The imagery of Alto's quoted poem went straight into my heart, brain, and imagination. What does my thing with feathers look like?

I'm not sure it's a bird, exactly. The body is brown, maybe a little furry, and fluffy, like a bird who just ruffled its feathers and is settling on a perch. But it has a FABULOUS tail. I mean, rainbow and long. It has it's eyes closed sweetly, and it's humming... Ode to Joy. It's smiling a little, like it knows something I don't. The thought makes me happy. I copied the poem, and it's on my dresser right now so I can think and imagine my thing with feathers, and love it.

Thanks for the poem Alto. I know it's Ms. Emily's but you gave it like a present.

It's so interesting. What Dickinson couldn't have known is that birds, evolutionarily speaking, seem to be ancient creatures, descended from pterodactyls. There's a theory that some of the dinosaurs may have been feathered, all long before any type of hominid existed. Feathers predate fur by millions of years.

I love how she keeps it somewhat inchoate- a "thing with feathers" and "the tune without the words", not actually named as a bird until the end. It is so steadfast, yet asks for nothing. Beautiful.

Is it a small brown sparrow, common as grass, but beautifully marked if you really look? A little finch, singing like a coloratura soprano? A hummingbird, no bigger than your thumb but with a heart rate around 1200 bpm, migrating thousands upon thousands of miles twice a year? Brilliantly colored, like a painted bunting or a bluebird?
