Some people on this forum have been tested to see which biological drug will help them. I think it' the Vectra D? I don't know but that's what I would ask for instead of hit/miss. (if it in fact works)
We had a thread on cures a few months ago. Petting a short-haired dog was probably the best one someone had actually been offered. Gin-soaked raisins, of course, kale, and whatever untested expensive supplement that quack "Dr." Oz is promoting this week are all contenders, too. Bcatz is right that the biologics are the actual best cure. They're just not as CUTE as the doggies.
As for me, it's dark and cloudy today, and I think hot tea and a good book is in order.
As for remission...that's a possibility. Several here on this board have found it. Clinical remission is hard to get to though. It's tough criteria to meet. Even if you did, you'd probably stay on meds. That's recommended protocol anyway. Even though my rheumy did take me off all meds when she said I was in remission a few yrs ago. I wasn't & she never tested me to even know for sure. But alas that's a sob story for another day.
It's entirely up to you (and your Dr) how long to stick with a treatment before changing. My drs rule of thumb is at least 6mo to know for sure if its going to work or not. Your Dr may be different. I started Remicade in August and will have my first dose after my 3 loading doses on the 18th. I'll see what the new year brings.
A cure for RA?? Not possible. Sorry. It's a chronic progressive disease. There's ways to control it and slow progression and even feel better with the right meds but not a cure. My all-time favorite is still the petting a short haired dog while eating gin soaked raisins. Just remember they have to be the white grapes not the purple. The size of the dog doesn't matter tho ;-)
I highly doubt your friend has it in just their knee since its systemic. And the one with "RA" in their organs and claims not to take meds is a whole lotta crazy. No way would I have whatevertheyhave attacking my organs and not be taking meds for it. RA can attack organs but the joint activity tends to come first.
I'm sorry. I haven't worked since January and I'm on my 3rd bio this year trying to get things under control. So I understand completely what you're dealing with. Broke is an understatement. Christmas coming with kids in the house isn't helping matters much. Having to choose between food or bills or Christmas gifts its not a very merry place to be. I'm sorry you're in the same boat.
Take care,
Emerald
