Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It is a disabling and painful condition which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and...
MTX has helped, but not enough. Hoping Arava helps more.
Not they are not biologics.
They are both DMARDs (which biologics fall into the DMARD category).
They act in a similar fashion, but have different mechanisms.
MTX is an anti-purine ,Meaning it acts on Guanine and Adenine
Arava is an anti-pyrimidine , meaning it acts on Thymine and Cytosine.
MTX is more locally acting, but Arava is more Systemically acting.
I take both.
My rheumy and I discussed it, since I had some luck with MTX, we decided to hit the other two nucleotides. In hopes that it will tamp my system down a few more notches.
Biologics are "designer" monoclonal antibodies. Made to target specific proteins, cytokines etc. Usually an injectable of some sort (IV or SQ), but an oral tablet was just approved provisionally in the US, but not Europe.
Just another reason I'm glad I'm changing doctors. Next week can not get here soon enough.
It is great learning what works for others,
It took me a few months on injections to get to the point where it didn't kick my butt completely every time.
I just saw my rheumy last week and he told me that I can split my dose in half and take it 12 or 24 hours apart. No more than 24 hours apart though.
I did the 12 hours this weekend and I am still really tired. Next week I will try 24 hours.
I take 20 mg SQ weekly (each ml is 25 mg, I take 0.8ml)
Arava takes MUCH longer to reach full effect.
I am finding that while I thought the SSZ wasn't helping, it actually was! Now I am in a holding pattern again.
