I went to the Dentist who rx Amoxicillin for an infected tooth. I told him I was on Mtx too, he said it's ok to take it. I called the Poison Control Center
They told me, never to mix the two together. The Antibiotic can make the mtx very toxic. I went to my Pharmacist who had a substitute for him because of the Holidays and he said it was fine to take it also. I called a friend who's Husband has RA and ask if he was ever on the Amox. He also is on Mtx and goes to my Rheumy, She is the one that told me to call the poison Cntl Cntr. I called my Rheumy who told me to get off the mtx and try Clyndomycin.
So a warning if you're not sure call the poison Cntr. Cntr. They answer all the question you might have.

Here's a direct quote from a professional monograph about methotrexate intended for healthcare professionals/pharmacists.
"Penicillins may reduce the renal clearance of Methotrexate; increased serum concentrations of Methotrexate with concomitant hematologic and gastrointestinal toxicity have been observed with high and low dose Methotrexate. Use of Methotrexate with penicillins should be carefully monitored."
It can react with MTX, but I've received penicillins, including amoxicillin, when I was on MTX and had no difficulties. However, every person is different and if you had labwork that came up abnormal prior to taking amoxicillin, then your doctor may have wanted you to have something else instead.

Funny tid-bit......I have 2 MAJOR Drug Interactions.....my Mtx & Daypro and my Mtx & aspirin. (I take 1 baby aspirin a day)
