I have been having bad flares in my hands and knees over the past year and now I have to have knee surgery in a few days. This was the diagnosis and it seems to be a lot of issues with the meniscus.
1. Narrowing of the lateral compartment.
2. Narrowing of the patellofemoral compartment along
bilateral facet.
3. Small joint effusion.
I'm not completely sure what all they are doing in the surgery but I do know they will be doing it arthroscopically. Has anyone had a similar surgery? If you did, how long was it before you were up and getting around? How long before you were walking unassisted?

I've been back on my feet in 24 hours and other times, a week or 2 and even 3-4 if it was bad to start with. It really depends on how bad it is inside and what they do to it. And having Ra can make it bad as well as surgery can provoke a flare.
But overall, it is much easier than full open joint surgery. I had my first scope way back in 1974....met my hubby in admissions and we were married 8 months later to the day. Celebrated our 40th this past year. Maybe why I like scopes over open joint surgery.
I've had reconstructive surgery and total knee replacements as well so if you have any knee questions, just let me know.

I've had 8 arthroscopic knee surgeries and 6 open joint surgeries including medial and lateral menisectomies and total knee replacements.
Even I mix up the various surgeries I've had.

PS.... thanks Buddhacat for catching that and yes, narrowing of the patello-femoral compartment refers to losing the cartilage behind the kneecap. Mine is now plastic...the cartilage not the kneecap!
May I please hit you up for some of your expertise? I have had 3-4 surgeries on my left knee including an ACL repair back in the old days when they used the long scalpel cutting.
I have been using a cane to walk for the past month because of new intensified knee pain. I have an appointment to see my knee guy on Tuesday to ask if it is time for a knee replacement.
May I please inquire as to how long one is out of work for this type surgery? Secondly, were you happy you had this surgery performed?

With any orthopedic surgery, do exactly what they tell you to do: no more, no less. Don't be a hero, and don't be a baby about it. Above all, don't fall and mess it all up.
Everyone is different in how they heal. Will you have to go to physical therapy after? I didn't, partly because I had no insurance and no money at the time. I ended up spending a lot of time swimming (after the incisions had healed, of course) which was a great way to rehab it.
