I think RA only comes into play if it impedes a necessary function of the job. For instance, if the job involved standing for 8 hours and you knew you couldn't do that without resting every 30 minutes or something, you should probably bring it up. If your feet are not bothered, it's not important to your being able to do the job.

I think when you do the drug test, they ask what you are taking, so just make sure you list things correctly. You might even take the list written down so you don't forget one.

Yup the standing is going to be a problem. I really need the job, i think i just wait and not bring it up during the interview.

I don't know how severe your condition is but I wouldn't recommend a job like that. You will need to be on your feet a lot. I have wanted a job at Kohls for years (for the discount :0)) but I have to be realistic I don't think I could last. Before I was diagnosed I worked at a department store and I remember being sooo tired and my feet hurt so bad. I don't want to be a downer just want you to think about this stuff.

Legally, in the USA, a potential employer cannot ask you about your health because of laws that protect your rights. With that said many will ask you to sign a job description once you get the job. Read this carefully because many job descriptions will say things like: can carry xyz lbs, can lift boxes overhead, can stand for xyz amt of time, can stoop or bend, and so on." If you sign such a job description then you have falsified your employment agreement. Also after you are offerred the job, part of your new employee paperwork may contain a form with a statement asking if you need "special accomodation". Again, they can only legally ask these things after you have been offerred the job and at that time you should be honest as not to compromise your employment agreement, but only if they ask. You don't have to volunteer information.

I chose to volunteer my information. I started a new job in June and within weeks requested promotion to a desk job. Part of my reasoning for asking for a early promotion was my health.

It is illegal for the employer to ask any question about an illness that will not get in the way of normal job functions. If you mention it, then they can ask any question they please about the disease.

Do not worry about a drug test. They are looking for the illegal drugs, and if something odd comes up, discuss it then.

Say nothing about it unless it would prevent you from performing some vital task. Standing can be accommodated and you are covered by ADA laws for that. I have to stand a lot too, and I have found ways to give myself breaks when it gets to be too much. Make sure that you have well built and well fitting shoes. I have terrific shoes (meaning that they're ugly) with my orthotics, and they have been well worth the investment.

Thanks so much for your input. The standing is the only thing I'm worried about,but I may only get a PT position. Anyway I'll let you all know what happened. Wish me Luck. It's been 20 Years since my last Interview and then I did most of them. Now that the Shoe is on the other Foot, it's kind of weird.

I worked at Kohls awhile ago (pre RA) and they were wonderful about accommodating people. I know one woman that had a hard time standing and they gave her a stool to use and never said a word about it. Good luck with your interview! I loved working there!
