Thank you for sharing. I agree with this doctor that a name change is in order and that public and medical field education is needed for better understanding of RA.

As a recently-diagnosed RA patient, I think this is a GREAT time to clarify the name of this disease. I never knew what RA was all about, other than joint damage. And the tv commercials with that golfer guy on it must be getting noticed by some. I think the commercials focus on healthy-looking individuals doing exercise, which is fine, but I would like to see them with some emphasis on what could happen if you DON'T get, or delay, treatment.

I saw my rheumatologist Friday and he sited this article and many of the points in it and said he had just read a very interesting article on RA in a trade magazine and felt that a better PR job was needed to educate the public on RA. I didn't tell him I'd just read it two nights before thanks to you! I was impressed he had read it tho ... and commented on many of the points about how debilitiating, painful, and lonely RA can be. Kudos to my doc!

Too bad WE are the ones reading the article and not all the people in our lives that just don't understand what we have, what we go through and what it means.
I am so tired of people looking at me and saying things like "but you're too YOUNG to have arthuritis" or "oh yea I got that too" meaning OA...
I think I will never ever get people to understand that you don't have to be 90 years old to have it. Sometimes when I have this discussion , someone will say " at least it isn't rheumatoid arthritis " and I reply "it is" and then we are back to them looking at me like I am crazy because they think I am too young.
When I say children have it, I get an even crazier look.
