Amoxicillin and Plaquenil?

Anyone took these two meds at the same time. I have a tooth abcess that is getting to the point to where I'm probably gonna have to seek medical attention for. It has my cheek swollen and painful all the way up to my eye. It must be some major infection going on. I'm thinking about starting some amoxicillin that I have had here for a while now. I have enough to give me 8 days of treatment. I just wanna check if it's safe to take them together. Of course it's 2 am on Saturday when this stuff comes to a boiling point. If I see my primary Monday I just about bet 50 bucks that he would write me 10 days of amoxicilliin. Maybe I can get the jump on this thing. When all this is said and done I think I'm gonna have some much needed dental problems taken care of. Thanks in advance.

When I had a minor tooth ache, I went to my dentist. He knows I have RA, and he knows the drugs I am on. Instead of his treating me, he sent me to an endodontist (I am sure I spelled that wrong).

If the infection is that bad, I really think you should call the Drs office right away, or get to an Urgent Care center, if you have one around you, or an emergency room.

Yes from what I hear these infections can get rather serious if not treated promptly. My teeth have been bad and gave me problems since I was very young. Tooth decay comes no matter how much I brush floss and rinse. Its a decayed tooth broken off at the gum that started this mess. Thanks for the advice MkP.

If you see your dentist regularly, call today (weekend) and have an antibiotic called in. I don't know if you keep taking plaquenil or not, but I imagine it's ok to not take it one day til you get a call in to the rheumatologist tomorrow. That sounds very painful!

I have taken amoxicillin and Plaquenil together before. I cut out the Methotrexate when I have to take any antibiotic due to infection. But, you should run this by your doctors first.

Thanks for all your replys. I got worried about it so I went ahead and took the dreaded trip to the Er. Might have been overkill but better safe than sorry. I think in the past my rheumy hasn't stopped my meds for antibiotic use. The er gave me ten days worth some antibiotics called clindamycin. I think it's the first time I have ever taking it. They also wrote me some 600mg ibuprofen for pain. They instructed me to follow up within 2 days with my dentist or pcp. The whole left side of my face is fat. Lol. I also catch myself drooling over there sometimes. I have had abcess ed teeth in the past but nothing like this before. They told me if I get a fever over 102, my eye swells shut, or if I begin to swell all the way over to my ear or in my neck then to come back. I had a mild fever earlier but the ibuprofen knocked it out pretty quick. I have always been plagued with horrible teeth even as a child. The last few years I kinda give up on them. My rheumy is wanting to start me on something different very soon and I see him next week. He says the plaquenil isn't strong enough for my ra and I agree. He mentioned adding arava and giving it a try. I've been off mtx since March due to liver enzymes but the numbers have since retreated. I'm gonna see if he will hold off until maybe December and just keep me on the plaquenil solo until I can get some of this long due dental work done. I will be calling my rheumy first thing in the morning to let him know what's going on. Thanks for listening. You all are my bread and butter when I'm down and out.
